Hey readers! I’m Jennifer, born and raised in Florida. I go to the University of Central Florida for Digital Media: Web Design, in Orlando (No, I do not go to Disney every weekend). Back home, I have three brothers and our dog, Mocha. I love traveling – I’ve been to 25 states, several countries, for a total of 3 continents. When I’m not studying you can find me hanging out with my Sigma Phi Lambda sorority sisters.

This summer I’m interning at the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) in the Creative Services (Marketing) Department. This internship is through the Students With Diabetes program, started by the 1999 Miss America, Nicole Johnson.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at just 8 years old. It was devastating news for myself and my parents. Type 1 was something that wasn’t well-known in my area. I didn’t meet any other diabetics until later in life. Just before I started college. my youngest brother was diagnosed with Type 1. It’s a mystery to us since there is no family history. When I started college I found “Type 1 @ UCF”, a SWD chapter where Type 1’s gather to hear about new technology, gain support, and have a community of people who genuinely understand what it is like to live with Type 1 in this college-stage. This group brought me to understand the importance of advocating for Type 1. So many college-students (and young adults in general!) don’t realize that there are hundreds of others in the same situation. They don’t realize that SWD is a thing, or that there are people ready to laugh and cry about Type 1. My hope is that through this blog and my internship I can reach those people.
